While the pandemic might have slowed it down – as it did for sport, in general – netball was growing from strength to strength in the UK after England’s success at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Two years prior to that, England Netball was celebrating its 90th anniversary.
Many women might still regard netball as a slow-paced, old-fashioned game limited to schools. However, the sport has undergone quite the transformation and has been given a new lease of life since England’s Commonwealth Games success. More than £5 million of National Lottery has been invested in the sport over a 10-year period, and it’s apparently being paying off. The year after England (also called the Vitality Roses) won gold at the Commonwealth Games, they picked up a bronze medal at the 2019 Netball World Cup.
Netball Schedule
Premier League Netball is England’s highest level of club netball, and each team playing in any of its three divisions has played through a tough county, regional, and national schedule to earn a place in the league. Just like in Premier League Football, the top teams in the lower divisions earn promotion in the league above, while the bottom two sides are related to the lower division. The Premier League culminates at the end of March.
The biggest global competition is the Netball World Cup, which is held every four years. Historically, Australia and New Zealand have dominated. Although, as mentioned, England did only recently win a bronze medal at the tournament.
